Menstrual Phase: The Basics

Every woman's favourite time of the month! This is the first phase of your period. Symptoms, length and PMS can vary from women to women. However, it is important to arm yourself with the proper knowledge and tools so that you can not only better understand your menstrual cycle, but better handle it.

How long does it last?

3-7 days, anything longer and heavier is something you should bring up to your doctor (and don't forget to be firm about your concerns)

What is happening to my body?

During this phase of your cycle your body is shedding your uterine lining (endometrium)  as a result of an egg not being fertilized by sperm (aka your girl didn't meet the right guy). As a result you get your period.

During this time of your cycle all your hormones are at their lowest. This is why you may feel tired and sluggish.

Focus:

Focus on eating iron rich foods during this time. Did you know when you are menstruating the iron in the red blood cells that you are shedding is also lost? Your body looses a lot of nutrients during this time, so it is important to make sure you have the proper supplementation during this phase. Focus on relaxation and slowing down in the first few days of this phase. Its great to push yourself but don't forget that your body also needs time to rest. Its all about BALANCE!!!

Iron Rich Foods:

  • Beets

  • Sardines

  • Dark Leafy Greens

  • Cranberries (because no matter when these are never bad to eat)
