Follicular Phase: The Basics
This is the phase of your cycle where your body is preparing to release an egg during ovulation. During the menstrual phase of your cycle, the pituitary gland is signaled to send Follicular Stimulating Hormone to each of your ovaries to signal the follicles to grow. Eventually releasing one egg during ovulation.
How long does it last?
The follicular phase is from the first day of your period until your ovulation day. In a 28 day cycle this phase will usually end on day 10 but it can vary and last up until day 22.
What is happening to my body?
During this phase of your cycle the hypothalamus prompts the pituitary gland which releases follicle stimulating hormone (FSH). This hormone stimulates the ovary to produce around five to 20 follicles in the ovary. Around day 7 of your cycle only one of these follicles survives and becomes the dominant follicle. It continues to swell and nourish the egg in preparation for it to rupture and makes its moves to be fertilized. Wild stuff I know.
Focus
During this time your skin will begin to glow again all thanks to the rising estrogen in your body. Sis, you'll be glowing. The rising estrogen in your body will give you a nice energy boost. During this time you should try new things. When it comes to working out try new types of exercise like boxing, HIIT and strength training. Youβll have the energy to give yourself that extra push.
Foods
During this phase you may notice that your appetite isn't all that big. That is OK! It is just your body preparing for ovulation and a rise in estrogen. Try to focus on good fats and lots of fruits and veggies to ensure your follicles are being properly cared for.
